Have just finished my final Gunther novel (Berlin Noir). In terms of Bernie's chronological life I've pretty much read them in reverse order as I was introduced to the books when a friend lent me Field Gray.

I sometimes find myself speculating on Bernie's final days. I see him back in Berlin, living modestly on limited means. The cigarettes, booze and conditions he's endured preclude a long life, perhaps he just about makes it to 1970. Despite his liberal leanings he was still born in the Victorian era and I doubt he has any love for the concrete buildings going up around him. The counter culture? Part of him should celebrate it's arrival but I'm not sure sure he would. I'm afraid I see his well worn cynicism developing into bitterness.

A melancholy view of the end of his life, apologies if this runs counter to anything stated in the novels, it's been a while since I read Field Gray

I don't know if this will post or not as I have written comments on this web site that have not appeared. Yesterday I started "A Quiet Flame" on Audible.com. For those of you are listening readers, perhaps you will understand my frustration at listening to the first 4 Bernie Gunther novels read by a world class narrator, John Lee, and then attempting to listen to Paul Hecht start the fifth installment. He reads 4 in a row before John Lee comes back for the last 2. I've listened to Hecht before and remember having had this issue.
I can not figure a reason why Mr. Kerr would switch for 4 and then go back to the original narrator. Whatever the reason, I'm going to have to skip the next 4 books so that the "real Bernie Gunther" has his voice again. I would read these 4 in print, but my life will not permit me the luxury or the patience.
Another one of my favorite authors had to switch narration after over a dozen of the "installments", but it was only because Ralph Cosham died suddenly. The author researched a while before choosing an appropriate replacement. Paul Hecht is NOT Bernie!!

Hi everybody,

I´ve just finished reading "The Lady from Zagreb", an excellent book in my opinion. I would like to ask you all here on the forum about the moment where Bernie marries Kirsten (p. 331 in my copy). Kirsten moves the ring onto the finger on her right hand and Bernie notices this, and - as I understand it - is quite thankful/proud/happy about it. Maybe it´s a strange thing for me to get hung up on (or maybe I´m just a bit stupid) - but why is this so important to him? Is it that deep down behind all his cynicism, he´s quite an old-school romantic?

Best regards,
Peter

I happen to be a coin collector and, along with various other countries, I also collect the coins of Germany. At the bottom of page 250 and top of page 251 of "The Lady From Zagreb", Bernie is crossing the border from Germany into Switzerland, and PK writes:

"Sergenat Bleiker, a detective from the Zurich City Police, met me with my visa and some Swiss money, which I bought with the gold reichsmarks that Eggen had given me: the Swiss didn't like our paper money and, even with Hitler's head on them preferred the hundred-mark coins."

From a numismatic viewpoint, there are two factual errors in the above quote. First, Germany never produced 100 mark gold coins in the entire 20th Century, let alone in the 12 years of the Third Reich. Secondly, while Hitler never had any hesittion about having his image being placed on postage stamps, for some reason his otherwise ubiquitous portrait never graced any Third Reich currency, either the coins or the banknotes.

A small mistake in the scale of things. Enjoying the book immensly.

Happy (and, hopefully, a more Peaceful) New Year Everyone.

If you get the chance, read the 'Station Series' books by David Downing. He has written a series of espionage thrillers, based around the character, John Russell, who is living in Berlin in the '40s with his actress girlfriend, Effi Koenen. Both take the same jaundiced view as Bernie does. They are well-written and very well researched. Read them in sequence starting with 'Zoo Station'. You will feel right at home if you love Bernie.

This may sound like a stupid question and may have been asked before. Just found this site so please bear with me.
Have these books been translated into German and what are the titles of the German versions? I have a German friend who would really enjoy this series and although his English is fairly good I think he would miss some of the enjoyment of the story if he was constantly interpreting in his head or having to refer to a colloquial dictionary. Thanks if you can advise.
